Why are so many people moving to Indiana from Illinois? According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 20,000 Illinoisans moved to Indiana in 2015 alone. That’s the equivalent of 54 people relocating to become Hoosiers each day.

This statistic is no anomaly. Over the past 10 years, more than 119,000 Illinois residents crossed over to become official Hoosiers. This steady, decade-long migration from the Land of Lincoln begs the question, “Why are so many people moving to Indiana from Illinois?”

First and foremost, Indiana is more affordable for individuals, families, and entrepreneurs. With drastically lower tax rates, especially property tax rates, Hoosiers have a leg up on being a relocation destination.

Another advantage Indiana has over Illinois is the ability to attract jobs and employees. With a friendlier environment for industrial employers, attracting and retaining manufacturing jobs is much easier than it would be in Illinois. This is largely due to the workers’ compensation systems. Indiana has the second-least-expensive system in the nation. In contrast, Illinois is among the top 10 most expensive systems, and costs employers more than double what it would in Indiana. This regional outlier holds no chance when it comes to competing with the Hoosier State for job retention and employment growth.

In addition to the low cost of workers’ compensation, Indiana enacted Right to Work in 2012. According to the National Right to Work Legal Defense Foundation, the committee “advocates that every individual must have the right, but not be compelled, to join a labor union.” The foundation then assists employees who are victimized because of this.

Finally, due to the widely available workers’ compensation for employees, the Right to Work law, and Indiana’s friendly industrial climate for employers and manufacturers, Indiana’s personal income has grown twice as fast as Illinois’ since the beginning of the great recession (Illinois Policy).
