Labor Day: Celebrating a Worker’s Right to a Safe Workplace

As you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend, have you ever stopped to consider what Labor Day is really all about? The first Monday in September is given the designation as Labor Day, and it is a day for celebrating the American worker - their achievements and their contributions to building our nation. It is also a day to celebrate workers’ rights and the many activists who fought to obtain those rights for hardworking Americans.

Thanks to activists, the OSH Act (Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970) and other laws have made workplaces safer and more enjoyable for workers and given worker's a right to a safe workplace.

According to OSHA:

“The Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 (OSH Act) was passed to prevent workers from being killed or seriously harmed at work. The law requires employers to provide their employees with working conditions that are free of known dangers. The Act created the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), which sets and enforces protective workplace safety and health standards. OSHA also provides information, training and assistance to workers and employers. Workers may file a complaint to have OSHA inspect their workplace if they believe that their employer is not following OSHA standards or that there are serious hazards.”

If you are a worker, the OSH Act gives you the right to have your workplace inspected for possible hazards and requires employers to deal with potential on-the-job hazards via training, employee awareness, protective equipment, exposure limits, and more!
